Shiki - A vampire horror with no main character, instead it centres around a village and gives several prospectives from villagers that intertwine to make up the story.

Eden of the East - Action, Comedy, Drama, Mystery, Romance, Sci-Fi, Thriller. Bit of a bourne identity vibe to start with which is comical; the main character has no memory of what he's been doing, as the story progresses you learn what he has done and what objective he has been given.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Action, Dementia, Drama, Mecha, Psychological, Sci-Fi. Biological mecha anime with lots of old testament references thrown into the mix, it has a series and 2 movies. When it was being made the creator was having psychological issues which may have effected the coherence of the anime, In the last few year 3 more movies have been made which are more coherent and a 4th is supposedly on the way. The newer movies are a thought to be a alternative series of events to the original series and movies but some people think they are sequels.
Old testament stuff to help with understanding:
In the Old testament Adam is the progenitor of Humanity, Lilith is a angle who was incompatible with Adam (Adam's first wife) and Eve was created from Adam so compatibility wouldn't be an issue.
For Evangelion Adam is the progenitor of Angles and Lilith is the progenitor of Humanity so they've sort of switched and Evangelion's take the roll of Eve made from either Adam or Lilith. There are other references but those are the most important and there is also a video on youtube that has a fairly good explanation of the first lot of Evangelion although there is one thing in that I have a issue with.
Ghost in the shell - Mecha, Police, Psychological, Sci-Fi. Set in the future when all human body parts can be replaced with artificial parts, ghost in the shell is about Public Security Section 9 who investigate cases of corruption and terrorism. There has been 2 movies and a prequel tv series with the first movie also getting a make over dubbed 2.0, recently a prequel tv series to the first tv series has also been released followed by another movie.
Space Dandy was pretty good.
And I always enjoyed Lupin III when it was on Adult Swim many years ago.

Monster - Drama, Horror, Mystery, Police, Psychological, Seinen, Thriller. Anyone who liked death note or Code Geass may like this as the plot plays out in a similar way. A doctor is faced with a choice save the town mayor or a small boy and of course he picks the boy, afterwards the doctor comes to regret saving the boy feeling responsible for him. Over a number of years the doctor tries to trace the boys whereabouts and in the process discovers the boys past.
Claymore - Action, Adventure, Demons, Fantasy, Shounen, Super Power, Supernatural. Claymore has a medieval style setting with enhanced women (referred to by normal people as silver eyed witches) who slay Yoma (Demons), as the plot processes in classic anime fashion the characters power up as they fight harder and harder foes. The down side to this anime is that it deviated from the manga and although it does have a ending it leaves aspects of the plot unresolved.
Berserk - Action, Adventure, Demons, Drama, Fantasy, Horror, Military, Romance, Seinen, Supernatural. Medieval setting covers the story of Gutz who joins a band of mercenaries lead by Griffith's who has a dream of having his own kingdom but their destiny will take a truly hellish turn. Berserk has a series and currently 3 movies, the series deviates from the manga by missing out a couple of characters, also the first episode needs to be taken with a pinch of salt as it is set after the events of the series so doesn't reflect what the majority of the series is like. The 3 movie (Golden Age Arc) cover the same portion of the manga as the series does but are truer to the manga and include the characters that were missing from the series, that being said the series does have the advantage of being longer so it fleshes out the characters more along with providing more detail to the events.
If your not a anime fan then this is probably a good one to go for as it's very much like some medieval stories made in the west but be warned they don't skimp on the gore and the end of this arc of the story goes to some very dark extremes.
Future Diary - Action, Mystery, Psychological, Shounen, Supernatural, Thriller. The God of time and space Deus Ex Machina has granted a selection of people the ability to know the future, they can access this information from their diaries written in there own words. The purpose of this is to select a successor to Deus Ex Machina who will inherit his powers so they need to kill each other off, everyone records info in their diaries in different ways so they don't all have the same info and should their future be heading to their death they will receive a dead end in thier diary.
I like Gurren Lagaan and Death Note... my room-mate in the army got me to watch those.
Yeah both are good, used to work with someone who would give you a detailed explanation of why Gurren Lagaan is the best "anime" "tv show" "story" etc ever made.....
Added a bit extra to my description of Evangelion to hopefully help a bit with the understanding of the underlying story.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Action, Comedy, Mecha, Sci-Fi. Ok so this is probably right up there on anime fan's must watch list and is a fairly good example of anime in general. The plot continuously expands the characters horizons and does it with boldness, energy, humour, and heart a true epic.
Death Note - Mystery, Police, Psychological, Supernatural, Thriller, This has 1 series, 2 movie which are the series re-cut and made shorter, a live action movie, a live actions spin off and I believe there was something about Hollywood doing a remake of it as well. It has also caused few children to be expelled from school in the USA and has a murder connected to it in Belgian were a note left by the murder at the crime scene had a reference to the anime "I am Kira". Light Yagami the main character comes into possession of a book that when you write someone's name in it while knowing what they look like they will die, so Light deals out justice as he see it. Detective "L" set about tracking him down to apprehend him and they have huge game of he knows I know that he knows I know he knows.
